Marshall Gilkes is a trombonist, composer and educator. He is a member of the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and performed on the big band’s Grammy Award winning album The Thompson Fields. Additionally he is a member of the Grammy Award winning WDR Big Band. Gilkes has performed and recorded with many jazz luminaries including Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, David Berger Jazz Orchestra, Gil Evans Project, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, the Christian McBride Big Band, Billy Cobham, Ryan Keberle, Edmar Castañeda, Barbra Streisand, Matt Clohesy, John Scofield, Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, Ron Carter and Maceo Parker. He was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and won Downbeat magazine’s Critic Poll in the up and coming trombonist category. Gilkes received his music degree from Juilliard School where he was enrolled in the jazz program, while he simultaneously continued his classical studies under Joseph Alessi, the longtime Principal Trombonist of the New York Philharmonic.
